  First impressions of this property were good with pleasant, efficient and helpful staff on duty at the desk. The equally pleasant and efficient baggage assistant duly escorted us to our room on the first floor with pleasant views across the car park to the ocean. The room proved to be quiet, especially at night, which was important for us and much appreciated.
  The room was relatively small and a bit overcrowded with an unnecessarily large coffee table obstructing access to the deck that was a very generous size.
  The bathroom was somewhat dated and in need of renovation. The shower door would not stay closed due to a faulty magnetic latch.
  The pool and garden area was exceptional though I would suggest efforts be made to discourage youths and adults alike to not participate in invasive, vigorous and potentially dangerous ball games in and across the pool discouraging others from using it as it is meant to be used.
  Overall we enjoyed our brief stay and despite some relatively minor, but nonetheless important issues that were disappointing, we would return to the property but would make a point of requesting a recently renovated room.
  Staff and management were always responsive and helpful and ensured our visit went relatively smoothly. We also thank them for their help with our airport transfer.
  Finally, please lets have some Aussie made T-Bags for overseas visitors to enjoy and perhaps also a sheet under the doona as well as on the mattress which would allow casting off the doona, but still be covered, when it becomes hot.

  Shangri La Cairns is right on the Marina so is extremely close to where you catch your boat out to the Great Barrier Reef. Rooms are spacious, they have an outdoor pool, sufficient gym and is above a shopping centre (albeit a crappy one), some good bars and restaurants and extremely close proximity to the lagoon and main esplanade.
  Staff were polite and extremely efficient. They let us have a late check out which we appreciated. We were on a level where the conference rooms are so it is a bit weird to walk to your rooms when conference guests are around but that's just the layout. The hotel is considered 5 star and feels like that in the lobby but it does feel a little dated overall. The hotel has a good bar with happy hour and buffet breakfasts at the restaurant. It was so so busy, they needed an extra hand to help the chef with the eggs/french toast (the chef was doing a great job considering). They also need another staff member to fill up the food options. I also think proper coffee should be included, not an extra cost.
  For locality and niceness of staff, you can't go past this, but a few things let down the score.
  FYI you need to pay for any extra people in the room. Even for a room with double beds, you have to pay for 3 or 4 people if there's extra.
